May 2018 Happy Tails!

Chico is a 7 month old Chihuahua who underwent surgery to treat a badly, broken leg. Chico lives with a young, single income family in Cortez, CO, including a 5 year old boy who loves Chico very much and was used to sleeping with the dog. Unfortunately, both dog and boy rolled out of bed in the middle of the night, with the child landing on the pup.

According to mom, Cynovia, both were traumatized by the accident. Chico was initially assisted by For Pet’s Sake Humane Society that offers help to clients who can’t afford care. They covered the cost of Chico being seen, x-rayed, and having the injured leg splinted. They then assisted the family in applying to other resources for the orthopedic surgery to pin the broken bone. Fortunately for Chico, both HHF and Ginger’s Legacy were able to pitch in and cover the cost of surgery.

Unfortunately, that first surgery was unsuccessful in fixing the bone and little Chico had to undergo amputation of the leg in order to save his life. We wish the family well and are pulling for this sweet little boy to recover, adjust to his new normal, and get on with life. Chico is also our “poster boy” for this year’s Saving Pets Challenge, running from May 1 through May 31st.
