If you’re new to Colorado you may have questions about pet laws. What vaccinations are required? Does my pet need to be licensed? What are the leash laws in my city? These are all great questions and the answer is: It depends! Colorado does not have over-arching pet laws; the state allows each municipality to develop and enforce individual rules. The best way to stay on the right side of the law is to ask your local veterinarian or Humane Society. However, to make the process a little easier, below are some universal steps to help get you started.
- Get your pet vaccinated against rabies. ALL municipalities require an up to date rabies vaccine. Puppies and kittens can receive their first rabies vaccine between 2-4 months of age and will need to get another each year (or 3 years depending on the vaccine).
- License your pet with your local city. Colorado cities vary on licensing laws but, generally speaking, you’ll want to license within 30 days of arrival. Kittens and puppies need to be licensed within their first few months. Licenses are almost always cheaper if your pet is spayed/neutered, and ALWAYS require proof of a rabies vaccine. A license enables your pet to be returned to you when lost and serves as proof of your pet’s vaccinations if a conflict occurs.
- Get your pet microchipped. June is National Microchipping Month and is a great time to take this extra step in ensuring your pet’s safety. Microchipping is a relatively cheap procedure and can save you a lot of heartache if your pet is ever lost.
- Update your pet’s collar tags. Attach your pet’s license tag to his/her collar and consider purchasing a personalized tag with your new phone number so you’re easy to contact.
- Educate yourself on local leash laws. Most cities require pets to remain in the control of a responsible person at all times. What that means varies from city to city. If you are unsure of your local laws, always keep your pet on a leash. Your city’s website or local police station will be able to give you details on your specific rules.
- Purchase and carry a supply of waste bags. Cleaning up after your pet will ensure you stay in the good graces of the law, and of your neighbors.

Colorado is a very pet friendly place and the laws are in place to protect pet, owner, and our beautiful landscapes. It only takes a few minutes to educate your family and take the necessary steps to keep your pets safely at home with you.
