New to Colorado – Cat Cafes

No matter where you go in Colorado, you’re bound to come across dog friendly businesses. Whether it’s shopping, eating, or trying craft beer, dogs are everywhere. But what about the people who love cats? Where can they go to get their furry fix?

Cat cafes are a relatively new concept in the United States and Colorado is getting on board. Essentially, these cafes are themed entirely around cats, complete with living cats you can pet, play with, and even adopt. The “Look What the Cat Brought In” rescue and shelter hosts a Saturday café serving hot drinks and small snacks while patrons play with the adoptable kitties. In Denver the “Denver Cat Company” offers art, food, and friendly cats seven days a week.

At first glance, a cat café may seem like an odd idea but the benefits are many. First, cats are playful creatures and benefit greatly from daily exercise. Also, cats are often accused of being anti-social and these cafes offer opportunities for each cat to practice his or her human social skills. Finally, the casual atmosphere lets each kitty show off unique personality traits, helping potential adopters pick the best fit. That means, when they get adopted, the whole family will have an easier time adjusting.

If you want to check out one of these unique places, it’s important to remember a few things. First, cafes usually charge a small “cover fee” for entering, which helps defray the costs of caring for the animals. Some offer memberships for repeat customers. Also, no matter how friendly they are, cats are animals and not every one wants to be approached in the same way. Children should be closely supervised and even adults need to remember to use caution and remain calm.

Cats may never gain the public acceptance that dogs have but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of cat lovers out there. If you’re looking to adopt or just want to spend time with some lovable creatures, cat cafes may be the perfect place for you.
