February 2019 Happy Tails!

This down-in-the-dumps pup is Honor, a 4 month old dog that lives with the Ocampo family. Rosemary is a widow raising 3 teenage sons, one who is living with autism. She got Honor and her brother, Zeus, to help provide companionship and possibly train as service dogs for her autistic son, but dogs being dogs, they managed to get themselves into some potentially fatal trouble. In her own words, “I’m so grateful that there are people out there that are willing to help pet owners with emergency medical expenses. Honor and her brother, Zeus, were at the pet emergency earlier this month due to ingesting rodenticide they had discovered. We live near a field and from time to time we do get field mice. We were able to catch them (the dogs) in the act of eating it and got them to the emergency room quickly. They gave them an injection to induce vomiting and then a charcoal slurry. We were sent home with K1 vitamins and medicine for their stomachs to prevent irritation. This happened on New Year’s Day. Honor vomited yesterday morning and then aspirated on her own vomit.”

Because of the recent emergency room visit, Rosemary was short on funds to get Honor treated for aspiration pneumonia. Luckily for her, she is a longtime client of Bijou Animal Hospital, who got the dog into treatment immediately, which included hospitalization and IV fluid therapy. They then referred Rosemary to HHF. In addition to the two pups, the family has another dog named Blue, who is 14 years old. We’re so glad Honor is on the mend and caution everyone to check around the house, yard, and storage sheds to ensure toxic chemicals are out of reach of curious pups or kids.
