If you’re new to Colorado, you’ve probably already noticed the wild temperature swings this time of year. One day can be 70 degrees, followed by snow the next day. The unpredictability of the weather can cause problems for humans and pets alike, especially when temps drop dramatically. We bundle up when the temperatures drop but it can be easy to forget our pets can get cold, too. Some dog breeds love the cold. Huskies, for instance, often love to play in the snow. But many other breeds do not have their natural cold tolerance. Even dogs who enjoy the cold weather may not know when enough is enough.
Even if the morning starts off warm, it is possible for the weather to take a turn for the worst at any point. If you have a habit of leaving your pets outside, even for a limited time, during the day this time of year you need to take some precautions. Ideally, bring them in unless you can be home to supervise. If that is simply not possible, provide something for shelter and warmth. Styrofoam coolers can make a cheap and easy shelter for cats. For a small investment you can buy or make a wooden shelter for a dog. Include soft insulating material inside for your pet to “nest,” such as blankets and pillows. And don’t forget to provide water. Just because it’s not hot out doesn’t mean your pet doesn’t need just as much water.

Keeping your pet warm and comfortable through the winter months is as simple as doing a little planning. Watch the temperature and modify your pet’s walks accordingly. If it’s below freezing a few short walks may be better than one long one. Bring a towel with you to wipe off paws if they get snowy or covered in salt. Once you get home, wipe off paws again and remove snowballs from fur and between toes. Booties may be a good option for dogs with especially sensitive feet. Also, cut down on bathing in the winter. Bathing can remove essential oils, drying out skin and causing flaking, itching, and even bleeding. Keep in mind the cold can cause a pet’s calorie needs to increase so adding a little extra at feeding time may be necessary. Finally, ensure your pet has a dry, warm place to sleep. A pet bed, warm blanket, or pillow is ideal. Keep his or her bed away from drafts to increase comfort.
By spending just a little time watching the weather, and being prepared, you can ensure you and your pet get the most out of the beautiful Colorado winters.
