Harley’s Hope Foundation COVID-19 Response

Hi Everyone,

We hope that you and your companions all remain healthy and safe during this difficult time. We want to let you know that Harley’s Hope Foundation remains open to business and committed to help those struggling to hold onto their pets. We continue to accept applications from those in need of help with major and emergency veterinary care, but are restricting our services to Colorado residents only.

Because of hardships caused by this pandemic and the ensuing economic fallout, we have temporarily loosened some of our veterinary program guidelines to assist those with animals suffering from chronic health conditions. If you have lost your income due to Covid 19 layoffs, can provide proof of such, and need assistance with the cost of medications to help keep your pets’ ongoing health conditions under control, you may qualify for our new, temporary voucher program providing assistance up to $150 towards your pet’s medication. Complete our application for assistance at https://www.harleys-hopefoundation.org/applicationforservices.html and provide proof of need as well as proof that you have been providing your pet with medication. We are also temporarily broadening our current emergency foster guidelines to make this program available to seniors and anyone else impacted by Covid-19.

In addition, if you know of someone who is quarantined due to exposure to the virus or has active symptoms and needs pet food, but cannot leave their home, or pet parents who fall into the high risk category and are afraid to leave their homes, please contact us at (719) 495-6083 or info@harleys-hopefoundation.org. We may be able to assist by delivering pet food to their doorstep. This service is available in El Paso, Teller and Pueblo Counties and is carried out in collaboration with the Colorado Pet Pantry. If you would like to help deliver pet supplies should this need skyrocket, please complete our volunteer application at https://www.harleys-hopefoundation.org/volunteerapplication.html. We want to stress that this service is only for those who are unable to get to the store due to age, illness, or transportation issues.

Sadly, we are hearing that pets are being surrendered to shelters out of fear that pets can spread the disease. This is simply not true, so please don’t overcrowd the shelters and give up on your furry family members. Pets are a great source of comfort as we self-quarantine and have limited contact with other people. We also don’t want to see pets euthanized because shelters are filled to capacity with animals at a time when people are not adopting. We do anticipate some folks will need to place their pets in emergency foster care should they become ill or need to tend to an ill family member. So, if you are able to foster, please, please fill out our foster application on our website at https://www.harleys-hopefoundation.org/volunteerfosterapplication.html. We may not need you right away, but would rather have a foster network set up and ready to go than to scramble to respond as the requests come in.

And, lastly, we want to thank you for your continued support. Charities are often overtaxed during times of crises, and while this is very much a human crisis and we applaud those groups and individuals fighting to address human needs and suffering, we do not want to see a spike in pet euthanasias and surrenders because help was not available.
