While our everyday programs are still very much up and running, HHF leadership felt the need to do more during this unprecedented time in our history. In partnership with the Colorado Pet Pantry, http://www.coloradopetpantry.org, we started a no-contact pet food and supply delivery program that launched on April 2nd. Since then, almost 4,000 lbs. of food and litter have been delivered to high-risk pet parents in El Paso, Pueblo, and Teller Counties, feeding 276 animals as of this writing.
We have heard so many sad stories along the way of people battling multiple health issues or simply being high risk due to age (our oldest client is 103 years young), yet their concern was not for themselves as much as it was for their pets. One client shared with us that she ran out of dog food, began feeding her four small canines hot dogs, only to run out of those as well. She contacted 211 seeking help, was referred to Harley’s Hope, and we were able to get food to her within an hour of receiving her call.
Can you imagine being stuck in your home, afraid to go outside because of this killer virus, but faced with the prospect of not being able to feed your companions? We know the incredible and positive aspects of the human-animal bond and how pets help the elderly live longer, better-quality lives. It must be an awful and terrifying feeling to choose between keeping yourself safe and possibly losing your pet or exposing yourself to a potentially life-threatening virus in order to keep your pet safe. Fortunately, that choice no longer needs to be made.
We want to thank our incredible volunteer drivers – Bryan, Kelly, Tabatha, Kathy, Laura, David, and Cynthia, who have logged thousands of miles to make these deliveries happen. We want to thank the Colorado Pet Pantry for working in partnership with us and providing much of the food and litter that is going out to our local pet parents. We want to thank our community members who have reached out to donate more pet food and supplies to the program. And, we want to thank those of you listed below, and El Pomar Foundation’s Hambrick Fund, for cash donations to help keep this program, and all of our programs, up and running.
Our organization’s leadership is committed to continuing this service into the Fall as we know so many seniors and those with major health issues should continue to stay at home. And, with medical experts saying there is a very real threat of a second wave of the Coronavirus, we are committed to continue helping pets and their people stay together. Stay safe, everyone!
