Happy National Cat Lovers’ Month

December is National Cat Lovers’ Month but for those of us who are lucky enough to have a kitty companion, every day is another opportunity to show them how much they mean to us. Although dogs may often be touted as “man’s best friend,” cats make excellent friends. Cats are often independent, usually quiet, much more affectionate than people give them credit for, and have a life span of 13-17 years. However, it is important to remember cats are living beings and if you take on the challenge of cat ownership, keeping your kitty safe and healthy is your responsibility.

Cats are, quite literally, good for your health.  Studies have shown that cat owners have a lower risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke, possibly because petting a cat is relaxing and helps relieve stress. Hearing a cat purr has also been theorized to reduce pain. And, if those weren’t good enough reasons, watching a cat play is a never-ending source of laughter. These potential health advantages make cats particularly good companions for older individuals or those who cannot meet the physical demands of daily walks and playing with a dog.

If you want a pet but live in an apartment or do not have easy or safe access to outdoor spaces, cats are the ideal choice. They’re smaller than most dogs, won’t wake up the neighbors, and are all around lower-maintenance. Most cats will groom themselves and can be left alone for longer periods of time as long as they have a well-maintained litter box. This does not mean cats don’t want your companionship, however. They will seek you out and return the affection you show them.

There are important things to keep in mind, however, before you choose to bring a cat into your home. Harley’s Hope recommends that cats are kept as indoor animals only. Allowing your cat to roam free out of doors can be dangerous to the cat and to local wildlife. Cats are hunters and will often kill songbirds and small rodents. This can negatively affect the ecosystem in your neighborhood. Also, cats are small and difficult to see, especially at night, meaning they are in danger of being run over in traffic. And, it is an unfortunate reality that some people will purposely hurt a cat left outside. The best way to protect your loving furry companion is to keep your cat indoors at all times. Provide a safe environment, a clean litter box, clean water, food, and stimulating toys, and you will have a happy healthy companion for years to come.
