It’s October and that means many of us are looking forward to Halloween. But, before we get there, we have an opportunity to bring attention to a very good cause. The fourth of October is World Animal Day, an international day-of-action for animal rights and welfare. The day itself is recognized on the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals. Many of the stories of Francis center around his love for animals and the environment. The ideas of animal rights and animal welfare center around the philosophy that animals are sentient beings with the right to avoid suffering and that human beings have an obligation to treat animals with kindness and respect. This does not only apply to animals we keep as pets but also to those in zoos, circuses, and farms. There are many ways each of us can contribute to the well-being of animals. Below are a few ideas.
Donate to animal welfare non-profit organizations—If you have the means, monetary donations are often the easiest way to help animals in need. Local organizations, such as Harley’s Hope, directly benefit your local community. However, there are many national level organizations like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The ASPCA is currently working to help animals impacted by Hurricane Ida by evacuating animals from shelters in the danger zones to safe areas.
Volunteer your time—Many animal welfare organizations run on a very limited budget and rely on the kindness of volunteers. The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region makes it easy to become a volunteer and is always looking for energetic, caring people. Opportunities range from basic shelter duties to fostering animals to get them ready for adoption.

Use social media in a positive way—Share your volunteer stories and encourage others to join you. Connect with and follow organizations like the ASPCA or Humane Society to stay informed on upcoming events and important legislation. Reach out to local and national leaders via their social feeds to encourage them to take action on animal rights bills. Social media can be a powerful tool to fight for issues that are important to you.
Adopt—Animal adoption is a big decision and one that should not be taken lightly. However, if you have the capability, and desire, there are many animals who need a home. This applies to more than just dogs and cats. The Humane Society often has ferrets, rats, and rabbits for adoption. And, if you’re looking for something bigger, there are organizations that specialize in large animal adoption. The Colorado Horse Rescue, for example, cares for and adopts out horses to loving families.
There are varied ways to contribute to animal rights and welfare causes. From donations, to volunteerism, social activism, and adoption, all involvement counts. The important thing is to find a way that works for you and your family. Remember that the animals in your life cannot advocate for themselves so it is up to us, as compassionate human beings, to treat them with kindness and help them whenever we can.
