If you have been considering adopting a dog, October is the month to do it. As part of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) efforts to promote dog adoption, October is “Adopt a Shelter Dog” month! Every year, 3-4 million dogs enter shelters across America. Some of these dogs have been rescued from dangerous or neglectful circumstances, some have been surrendered by overwhelmed owners, and some are strays born on the street. Regardless of their origins, they all need safe, loving homes.
Studies have shown that living with a dog benefits the owner as much as the pet. People benefit through increased activity and social interaction. Pets provide companionship and stress relief, and some shelter pets can be trained as service animals for people in need. People who adopt shelter pets also report feeling much better about the experience than those who buy from pet stores. During the month of October many shelters will run special events to promote adoption. These events include reduced adoption fees, spay and neuter programs, and specialized events. A quick call to your local shelter will get you all the details you need.

Adopting a dog is a big responsibility so, before you head to the shelter, do your research. How much time can you devote each day? What kind of dog will fit best with your lifestyle and family? If you are active, a larger breed which needs lots of daily exercise could be a great fit. If you live in an apartment, a smaller breed may be a better fit. Also consider if your living arrangements have any pet and breed restrictions. Will your rent increase when you bring home your new friend? Can you afford the maintenance with vet bills, food, and other necessary items?
If October is not the best time for you to adopt, there are still ways you can help those shelter dogs. Petfinder.com has a list of great ideas including donating your Facebook status; fostering a pet on a temporary basis; volunteering to walk dogs at the shelter; and donating items to shelters in need. Whether you donate time, money, or supplies, your efforts will help improve the lives of shelter dogs. And, whether or not you decide to adopt later, you will have helped countless dogs along the way.
