Not all of our cases involve trauma. Sometimes chronic health conditions like diabetes can cause an emergency like this one. Star was recently hospitalized for treatment of pancreatitis. This 13-year-old pup also battles diabetes, but her person, Virginia, is diligent in working with Star’s veterinarian to manage the disease. As a retiree, Virginia needed a little extra help with Star’s hospitalization and HHF was happy to assist.

But, what is pancreatitis? It is a painful condition caused by inflammation in the pancreas, part of your pet’s digestive system. Pancreatitis can be caused by many things, including a fatty diet, which is why pet parents are cautioned not to feed their animals human table scraps. But, the condition can also be caused by a hormonal imbalance related to medical conditions like diabetes and hypothyroidism, even cancer.
Pancreatitis can be treated with hospitalization and medications but can reoccur in pets prone to this condition. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, and lethargy. The condition can and does affect cats and dogs alike. If left untreated, the condition can prove fatal. For more information, consult with your pet’s veterinarian.
