August 1st is the Universal Rescue Dog Birthday

Everybody loves a birthday party. There’s cake! And confetti! And presents! For most of us, marking each year is something to look forward to and we celebrate our dogs just as enthusiastically as our human family. But what do you do when you’ve adopted your dog and don’t know his or her birthday? In 2008, the North Shore Animal League America, the largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world, solved that problem for everyone by declaring August 1st the universal rescue dog birthday. The day began as a way to promote and fundraise for shelter dog adoption while also celebrating the love and joy adopted dogs bring to so many families. Now it serves as a milestone for all shelter dogs whether they have been adopted or are still awaiting their forever family.

Surveys have shown that approximately 70% of dog owners celebrate their pooch’s birthday in some way, from simply buying a new toy to throwing a full party. Each year around two million dogs are adopted out of rescues or shelters across the United States. Most of those dogs were surrendered, lost, or strays, with no existing history. And no birthday. If you don’t have an official birthday for your pup, why not celebrate on August 1st? Your dog won’t know the difference but will definitely be excited to be the center of attention. Even if you know your dog’s birthday, you can still celebrate shelter dogs by volunteering your time or donating supplies to your local rescue. You might even end up with a new best friend.

How do you throw a birthday party for a dog? First, when celebrating your pup, remember to do so safely. Shelter dogs can be timid and easily frightened by crowds and loud noises so know your dog and keep the guest list appropriate. Dogs that are not well socialized would probably not enjoy a day surrounded by children and other dogs. Conversely, a very friendly and outgoing pup may love a huge backyard bash with all the neighborhood dogs in attendance. Remember many delicious human treats can be poisonous to pets so keep the human food for the humans and serve canine-friendly treats to the dog guests. Finally, gifts do not need to be extravagant to be well-loved. A new toy, a bed, or just a day playing with their favorite human can be the best gifts of all. However, and whenever, you decide to celebrate your furry friend, the memories are sure to last a lifetime.
