To Say Goodbye

We said goodbye this morning

in a most gut-wrenching way.

Your heart, we’re told, was just too

weak to last another day.

You fought your battle valiantly,

but couldn’t win the war.

The time has come, the doctor said,

we can’t do anymore.

We wrapped you up in old linen,

then laid you down to rest.

And, for the time we shared with you

we’ll feel forever blessed.

We linger now among the trees

to gaze upon your stone,

and console ourselves with

knowing your soul

has journeyed home.

For we do believe so strongly

we’ll meet again one day.

What use would we have for heaven

without our pets to guide the way?
