Director’s Notes

To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” — Winston Churchill

Older adults often face unique challenges, both physically and financially, which can make it difficult for them to care for their pets—yet studies have shown that pets can provide crucial companionship, emotional support, and even physical health benefits, especially to older pet parents. Because of this, Harley’s Hope leadership has decided to focus exclusively on supporting older Coloradans, ages 50 and up, and their pets.

This change took effect on March 31, 2025, and while Harley’s Hope is far from perfect,  we do believe in changing, as necessary, in order to meet the demands of our constituents, to respond to changing trends, as well as to improve our effectiveness.

So, why now? Colorado has one of the fastest-growing older populations in the country, and this targeted approach will undoubtedly make a significant impact on an often marginalized part of our society. By tailoring our services to meet the specific needs of older pet parents, Harley’s Hope is helping to address not only the health and well-being of the pets but also the individuals, ensuring they can continue to experience the joy of having a loyal companion for many years to come.

And, by reducing the number of applicants overall, we are able to increase the amount of help we give.  Restrictions on the type of veterinary cases we take have been lifted in recognition of the fact that sometimes, the biggest barrier is just getting the animal seen by a professional. We are reinstating emergency foster care but will continue to offer emergency boarding or in-home pet care for pets of those applicants who are hospitalized and temporarily unable to care for their companions. Pet food deliveries will still be available in the Pikes Peak Region as resources allow, with emergency distributions to other parts of the state handled through Chewy.com. Additional services such as transportation, pet deposits, and pet medication support will continue as well.

We hope those of you who have supported our mission in the past, will continue to do so. And, we hope those of you who haven’t yet given, will reconsider and join us in helping to reduce the homeless animal population and eliminate economic euthanasia.
